This coming season marks a personal milestone for me: my 40th year fishing the Battenkill River. The team and I have a bunch of cool ways planned to celebrate.
My relationship with the Battenkill stretches back decades. I first stepped into this river forty years ago, and over that time I’ve watched it change, recover, challenge anglers, and continue to demand respect, patience, and precision.
All of those years may not have been spent guiding, but they were spent learning. Learning water levels and seasonal moods. Learning insect cycles the hard way. Learning where the river gives, where it takes, and where it teaches humility. Long before Trico Unlimited existed, the Battenkill was shaping how I fish, how I teach, and how I approach this craft.
When Trico Unlimited was eventually formed, it was built on that foundation—decades of firsthand experience, observation, and time on the water. That history is what our clients tap into today: not just guide days logged, but a lifetime relationship with one of the most technical and storied trout rivers in the country.
Forty years later, the Battenkill still commands my respect. It still humbles me. And it still feels like home.
I look forward to sharing that experience, earned one season at a time, with those who choose to fish it alongside us.
